Premio Fundacion Magos in Málaga, Alongside Antonio Banderas

The inaugural edition of the awards for intercultural dialogue recognises him for taking flamenco 'to places it had never reached'.

On 15 November 2024, Málaga hosted the inaugural presentation of the Premios Fundacion Magos, which recognise those who promote dialogue between cultures. Joaquín Cortés received the award at a gala that also honoured Antonio Banderas and soprano Ainhoa Arteta.

In his speech, Cortes placed the essence of his career at the centre: taking flamenco “to places it had never reached.” Days earlier he had collected the Italian Red Cross award in Rome; the autumn of 2024 was a harvest of recognition on both sides of the Mediterranean.

Cultures in dialogue: it would be hard to find a better description of what his dance has been doing for three decades.
